There are a number of things that you can do with your iPhone for fun, but why look further than one of the most popular forms of entertainment – TV. This wasn’t possible for long after phones became sophisticated enough for their hardware to support streaming, simply because of the matter of paying for the program you are getting, but today you can find a ton of handy apps that will allow you to enjoy a bit of TV on your mobile device. These are just some of the ones that we have enjoyed most. Naturally, you should remember, that regardless of how much you are paying for the subscription or the app itself, the greatest cost will probably come from your data plan, as streaming videos can use up your monthly limit in no time.

NBC

This network hosts some incredibly popular shows, and the app allows you to easily view not only them, but different trivia, photo galleries and video clips coming from or related to the network. There have been some complaints about the way it works, including the somewhat reduced offer of available shows, and the reliability of the app itself, but since it is completely free you can simply try it out for yourself and see if you like what you get.

Showtime Anytime

Another provider of excellent shows, including Californication, Weeds, Homeland and Dexter, Showtime now allows you to watch their content on your iPhone. If you want to use the app, though, you have to be subscribed to Showtime with a cable company. However, apart from paying for that subscription, you won’t incur any additional costs, as the app itself is completely free.

netTV

Unlike the previous two, this app doesn’t only give you access to program of one network, but instead aggregates the content of more than 400 (mostly international) channels and presents you with live feeds. Since it relies on web streams of particular channels, you can’t expect a lot of consistency in what you are offered, but the app is still great for when you want to kill some time. If you are using Wi-Fi to stream videos, you can do it for as long as you like, while streaming over 3G is only possible in 10 minute chunks at a time. You can get a free version of this app, or pay $2.99 and get the full version.

Netflix

Netflix has already made its fame on PCs and it’s only natural that they want to spread to mobile devices as well. They have an amazing compilation of available shows and movies, and are constantly updating
it with new entries. While you may not be able to always find exactly what you are looking for, you will never be starved for choice. The app itself is free, but it won’t be of much use to you without a
subscription to the service, which starts at $7.99 per month.
